The Disturbing Truth About The Duggar Family (TV’s PROBLEMATIC Christian Family) Nobody Talks About

In recent years, the Duggars have faced an overwhelming wave of negative press. Stories about them seem to appear constantly on the news, across social media, and in magazine articles. Trying to keep up with all the developments feels like playing an endless game of whack-a-mole.

Most of the recent headlines have centered on Josh Duggar, and by now, most people are familiar with what took place. He has become the central figure in much of the family’s public drama, especially over the last several years. But today, the focus is not solely on him.

Instead, the spotlight turns to the Duggar parents, Michelle and Jim Bob. To many observers, they have proven deeply problematic. Their choices, behavior, and explanations over the years have often come across as genuinely strange.

Hey everyone, it’s your girl IQ. Today’s deep dive explores the world of Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar. We will look at their humble beginnings, the dysfunctional family dynamics, and the intense dramas that have unfolded. We are examining the many controversies, the outlandish moments, and the couple who exists behind the cameras.

So buckle up, and let’s step into the controversial, disturbing, and constantly shifting world of the Duggars.

This is Jim Bob Duggar and his wife Michelle. In many ways, they stand as the starting point for the entire famous Duggar clan.

Our story begins long before the Duggars became the polished media brand known today. They were simply an ordinary family living private lives, far from any national spotlight. The real question is how they stepped into that spotlight in the first place.

The person who helped introduce the world to the Duggars was Andrea Canning. She is an award-winning writer and editor who has worked for several major news organizations.

In May 2022, she published an article in the Huffington Post titled, “I introduced the Duggar family to the world. Am I responsible for their rise to fame?” Her editor had suggested she pursue an “as told to” story about an Arkansas family raising 14 children.

In journalism, an “as told to” piece involves recording someone’s spoken words through interviews and then shaping them into a polished article by a professional writer. That is exactly what happened here.

The story appeared in Parents Magazine in September 2003. The cover featured the children lined up behind their parents from tallest to shortest.

Andrea’s goal was to share stories about unique people and situations. Having 14 children certainly qualified as something out of the ordinary. Remember, this was before the era of “14 Kids and Counting.”

The article described the family’s daily routines, including how they managed countless chores and their massive grocery shopping trips. After it ran, staff at the Discovery Health Channel noticed it and pushed to create a documentary about the family.

Going back to Andrea’s question about whether she bears responsibility for their rise, the honest answer is that no one can say for certain. It is possible her piece played a part. Yet it is also worth remembering that Michelle and Jim Bob had been seeking public attention for years before that article.

Jim Bob had served as an Arkansas state representative in 1999 and 2001. Michelle was named Arkansas Mother of the Year in 2004.

It seems likely that the Parents Magazine story helped build the momentum that led to that award one year later. From there, things moved quickly.

The Discovery Channel filmed what was meant to be a single documentary called “14 Children and Pregnant Again.” It proved enormously popular and became the network’s highest-rated show at the time.

That success led to more documentaries, with a total of five eventually produced for Discovery Health and TLC. Before long, executives realized there was strong demand for a full reality series.

The show premiered in late September 2008. Even before the series launch, however, cracks were already forming in the family’s wholesome image.

A major revelation threatened to expose a dark secret that Jim Bob and Michelle had worked hard to keep hidden. The Duggars had become a national sensation, drawing interest from major networks, including Oprah Winfrey’s show.

Oprah wanted to feature the family in a full segment. That plan fell apart, however, when, according to In Touch magazine, a 61-year-old woman emailed Harpo Studios warning producers about misconduct involving Josh.

At the time, Harpo forwarded the information to the Department of Human Services, which prompted an investigation by the Springdale Police Department. It remains unclear exactly how Oprah’s team learned about the situation.

Jim Bob and Michelle told police that when Josh was first accused, a family friend had written down the allegations in a letter. That letter was placed inside a book in their home.

Sometime in 2006, they loaned the book to someone else, and the letter was discovered. Now that the foundation is set, it is time to examine some of the truly strange behavior displayed by Michelle and Jim Bob over the years.

One early example occurred in December 2006. During this period, Springdale police interviewed the Duggars about Josh’s actions.

In many ways, this marked the beginning of the perfect-parent image starting to crumble. Their decisions and handling of the situation struck many as deeply unacceptable.

Their approach reminded some observers of how Brian Laundrie’s parents handled matters in the Gabby Petito case. According to In Touch magazine, when police asked Jim Bob to bring Josh in for questioning in 2006, he tried to hire a lawyer and refused to produce his son.

At least two lawyers turned down the case. Another important voice in this story belongs to the anonymous internet poster known as Alice.

Alice posted a series of messages in 2007 on various message boards and forums. It is impossible to verify every single claim she made. She clearly carried personal resentment toward the family.

It is possible some details were exaggerated. Yet much of what she shared had not yet become public knowledge, which made her posts explosive at the time.

Alice claimed she attended the same church as the Duggars and had been inside their home. She presented herself as someone with genuine personal connections to the family and knowledge of their private life.

If her accounts are accurate, then the Michelle and Jim Bob viewers saw on television were very different from the people they were behind closed doors. Here are several of her posts shared in full.

This one is dated May 22nd, 2007.

“Let me tell you something about the precious Duggars that you don’t know. First, Michelle hasn’t bathed her younger children in years. It is all left up to the older children.”

“They have children that have never seen the inside of a grocery store. Everything that you have seen on TV is staged, big time. Michelle hasn’t cooked a meal in years, hasn’t cleaned house in years.”

“All she does is try to look normal for the TV cameras. Get real. This couple is out for the fame and money that they can get.”

“They receive love offerings from all over the country. They have church services in their home when it is to their advantage. They get paid for that.”

“He and his mother Mary have this all figured out. She is fame hungry, and she couldn’t manage this for herself, and now she is helping out Jim Bob and Michelle. She calls different TV shows and exploits her grandchildren.”

“This is the Duggars’ way of making a living and providing for the huge family: fame and fortune. In January, the whole family went to Chicago and taped the Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah wined and dined them for one week, and you know that had to cost some pretty pennies.”

“As you may have noticed, that show never aired, and it never will. Oprah was informed that Josh, the oldest son, had been harming his sisters. Yes, this is the truth.”

“Oprah turned them over to the Arkansas State Police Child Protection Agency. They have been investigated to some length. Jim Bob Duggar told the producers of the show that he built a small church out back for his followers.”

“His followers? Get real. This man is a fraud.”

“In April, they were in court with their story. They have to report to Arkansas Department of Health Services every six months. They lied and lied about their son to protect him at their daughters’ expense.”

“For some unknown reason, the boy is still in the home with the girls. God only knows if this is still going on. In my eyes, he is a child monster.”

“He should be removed from the home. What kind of parents cover up for one child and hurt the others? I do not believe that this is what God has in mind for them: frauding the American people, and taking their money and living off of it.”

“They did not build their home by themselves. They hired it done. The Discovery Health Channel and the TLC channel wrote them a check for over two hundred thousand dollars for them to build the house.”

“Everything inside the house was given to them except the kitchen; they did buy that themselves. The rest is all free. Mary and Josh were on the phone day and night asking for donations from soup to computers.”

“They also received a baby grand piano from Campbell Soup Company. The trip to California was also provided by the TV stations. It was mapped out mile for mile.”

“They did not spend a penny of their money. All the groceries and gas and lodging and clothing were paid for in advance. For someone who wants to be famous, why lie about the facts?”

“Seems funny to me. They are professional liars, both of them. They twist their words to make them look good and look like devoted parents and a great big happy family.”

“Nothing could be further from the truth. If you don’t believe me, contact the Arkansas State Police Child Protective Agency. It will be worth the time and effort to read about.”

“There is a lot more I could go into, but I simply do not have that much time. I think that it’s time the Duggars are stopped. They’re pimping out their family for material things to keep them fed and clothed.”

“If they cannot feed and clothe their children, don’t have them.” That was an awful lot to unpack in one post.

We are not finished with Alice yet. First, it is worth repeating that none of the serious information about Josh had reached the public for nearly a decade at that point.

Shockingly, if you look back at the original Parents Magazine cover that helped launch them, you will notice someone is missing. Josh Duggar was not in the photo and was not present for the shoot.

According to police reports from 2006, Michelle and Jim Bob had sent him away to a Christian program. Andrea had no idea about any of this when she wrote her story.

If she had known, the article would likely have been very different. Alice returned with another revealing post a few days later.

Again, not every detail can be independently confirmed, so these remain allegations. Yet many elements later proved consistent with facts that emerged, particularly around Josh. She wrote:

“I was always very supportive of the Duggars. I’ve been in their home. I’ve even gone to church with them.”

“Something just doesn’t feel right for some reason. I didn’t trust Jim Bob. Then the truth came out about his son.”

“He is the one that told what happened. Josh got up in front of the church and asked for forgiveness and all that stuff, but he was secretly still up to no good.”

“I really don’t know how long it had been going on before it all came out. But even after it did, Josh pretended to be this sweet, all-American boy who loved his family all the time.”

“He was going on sites on the internet and watching all that filth that it has. I know the person who contacted Oprah and told her that the family is not as pure as they seem.”

“They were taking Oprah, the Discovery Health Channel, TLC, and everyone else that they had appeared on for a big ride. They received money for each show. If not money, they got something out of it.”

“Jim Bob has made the statement that it is the way he has to provide for his family. Don’t you think that’s being a fraud? If not, please explain what is the difference.”

“They know that when they got on these shows, they lie. The more exposure they have, the more money that comes into them.”

“It was Oprah’s decision to turn them over to the authorities. Oprah is not the only one that has turned them in for abuse.”

“Of course, you can’t find any records on this; it has been sealed behind closed doors. The truth needs to be told, and I have made it my mission to stop this from happening.”

“They are frauds and living off of the good graces of others. I’ve watched them. It makes me sick inside to know what I know and to watch them get in front of a TV camera and lie.”

The contrast between the old-fashioned values portrayed on television and the emerging scandals created a painful clash. On “19 Kids and Counting,” Josh Duggar and his family were presented as the ideal of wholesome Christian living.

“All right, let’s all hold hands.”

But now the family faced intense scrutiny after allegations surfaced. Their oldest child, Josh Duggar, had inappropriate contact.

When the news finally broke publicly, it left many people feeling sick. How could something so serious have remained hidden for so long?

How could the family continue filming as though everything was normal? Most troubling of all, why would they keep Josh in the same house with his victims?

They carried on with “19 Kids and Counting” for multiple seasons while this situation continued behind the scenes. Not for one season, not for two, not for three, not for four, but for five seasons they presented a picture of a wonderful, happy family.

What were Michelle and Jim Bob thinking during all that time? When the story finally broke, a media firestorm erupted.

The Duggars tried to contain the damage by sitting down for a tell-all interview with Megyn Kelly. Many felt the interview did them no favors.

There was a great deal of minimization. There was plenty of blame directed elsewhere.

There was very little genuine accountability. And as time has passed, that interview has not aged well at all, especially in light of Josh’s later conviction.

It felt tone-deaf then, and it feels even more so now.

“When Josh had been through all of this—he had gone to the Christian-based treatment program, he had gone through counseling, he had gone to the police, and he emerged back into the home—did you feel that he was a threat still, or did you feel, not at all, that he could be trusted at that point?”

“Not at all.”

“Did you ever worry that the treatment didn’t work, especially with so many young children in the house?”

“No, no. Josh was a changed person.”

“Do you think—was there any motivation that you know of for this police chief to want to hurt your family?”

“I’m really not for sure. Must be an agenda. I’m not sure if there was a bribe or if there was some kind of personal agenda or something.”

“Definitely wasn’t to be caring about the victims. We had no fear because everything was taken care of.”

“That was a sealed juvenile record. And so, they had told us that all this stuff was done as a juvenile. This was all stuff that was sealed, and this is stuff that under law, there’s no way that this could ever be brought out.”

“I know that every one of us have done things wrong. That’s why Jesus came. I feel like this is more about an agenda, and there’s people that are purposing to try to bring things out and twisting them to hurt.”

“Now, what our son did 12 years ago is a major story to them, too. But yet, hopefully, justice will be served on the ones that release juvenile records to protect other juveniles from their records being released.”

“Joshua was actually 14 and just turned 15 when he did what he did. I think the legal definition is 16 and up for being an adult praying on a child, so he was a child praying on a child.”

“I don’t know if the rest of our family should be punished for the act of one of our children, something that happened 12 years ago, or not.”

Social media reacted strongly after the interview aired. Comments poured in criticizing the minimizing of the situation and the lack of accountability.

Many questioned why the parents were even doing the interview and why tougher questions were not asked. The whole exchange left a lasting impression of deflection rather than responsibility.

All Michelle seemed to want was to move forward, maintain relationships with her children and grandchildren, and continue living her life. That hope, however, appears to have faced challenges.

Her relationships with some of her adult children may not be as close as she once envisioned. Part of that may stem from the “jurisdiction system” they used to raise the children, where older siblings largely cared for the younger ones.

It is easy to see how that dynamic could create distance once the children grew up and became parents themselves. But the jurisdiction system is not the only unusual aspect of how Jim Bob and Michelle have raised their family.

Reports have surfaced that they did not allow their daughters to spend time with or help unwed mothers. They also reportedly banned beaches because it was too difficult for the boys to keep their eyes averted.

Their rules against dancing have drawn comparisons to the strict minister in the movie Footloose. They believe dancing can stir sensual feelings that are not allowed.

They have also disapproved of their daughters wearing pants, which creates an interesting contrast with more recent photos of the girls. Even showing ankles or wearing pants was once treated as a significant issue.

Michelle’s soft, baby-like voice has often been noted as something she uses more deliberately in public settings. In earlier footage, she spoke about struggling with anger and apologizing to her children.

She explained that when she feels anger rising now, she chooses to speak softly or even whisper. To some viewers, this gentle tone feels somewhat performed.

“No, the Lord has really convicted me. Gave me the verse: ‘A soft answer turns away wrath.’ I think years ago I was so convicted about that.”

“I remember crying in front of all my kiddos and just asking them to forgive me that I had failed so miserably. I said at that point, by God’s grace, I wanted to have victory over that angry spirit and to really bring that under the power of God’s spirit.”

“And many opportunities to practice that every day around here of lowering, even whispering when I feel that anger coming, to really just cry out to the Lord at this, send up a flare prayer at that moment.”

“And then really choose to lower my voice and then to whisper if I have to. Sit on the floor next to a little one that’s throwing a fit, laid out on the floor, you know, and just get down at their level and whisper in their ear.”

According to a source cited by Cafe Mom, an insider claimed that Jim Bob and Michelle behave very differently when the cameras are off. This echoes much of what Alice described years earlier.

The source said Jim Bob becomes a different person without the cameras rolling, and the same is true for Michelle. “I’ve seen her in a howling mood when she thinks no one’s around.”

“You’d be in the hallway or you’d be in the office and all of a sudden you hear her spouting off at the kids or running after them with a spoon or a spatula.” That kind of behavior was never shown on television.

Derick Dillard, who is married to Jill Duggar, has spoken about feeling misled regarding payment for the show. He and Jill believed they were volunteering their time as a ministry, only to learn later that Jim Bob was receiving compensation.

According to In Touch Weekly, Derick described Jim Bob as manipulative and deceitful. There has been talk for years about Derick and Jill possibly writing a tell-all book.

Only time will tell how much more information about Jim Bob and Michelle may eventually come to light. If you enjoy exploring these kinds of family stories, one of the most fascinating is the world of Kody Brown from Sister Wives.

It is quite a journey. Whether or not you have watched the show, hearing the full story is captivating.
